Welcome to Russian Hill

“Grand” and “charming” are just two of the glowing adjectives used to describe the neighborhood known as Russian Hill. Named during the mid-1800s when a small cemetery for Russian seamen was discovered there, it is now the location of one of San Francisco’s most appealing, charismatic districts. Slightly downhill from Nob Hill and resting above Ghirardelli Square and Fisherman’s Wharf, it also touches parts of Cow Hollow and the Marina. Perhaps best know as the location of “the crookedest street in the world,” a one-way stretch of Lombard Street. In fact, a few of the neighborhood’s streets are so steep that they are pedestrian only and are actually staircases rather than streets. The result is a delightful patchwork of gardens, alleyways and intimate parks unlike the scene in any other district in the city. Boutiques, restaurants and cafes, antique shops and even a mini French Quarter are all here and within a short walk from the Hyde Street cable car, which runs right through the neighborhood.
